Alpaca Husbandry: Introduction to all things Alpaca
This half day experience provides an in depth look at what it takes to care for alpacas and is designed for those considering owning their own herd or very interested in alpacas husbandry.
This workshop will include hands on handling techniques, training in haltering and walking an alpaca, an introduction to food, nutrition and health, as well as the importance of shearing, general health checks and annual vaccinations. We will also explore the many business opportunities they offer including the many uses for their incredibly soft, luxurious fleece.
The day will include:
· Introduction and History
· Basic care and husbandry with hands on experience
· Food, health and nutrition
· Overview to breeding, confirmation and fleece qualities
· Handling, herd management, haltering and walking an alpaca
· Introduction to fleece processing, spinning, felting and weaving alpaca yarn.
- Making the most of the business opportunity.
Fair warning: By the end of the day you may very likely be smitten and find yourself dreaming of that herd of your own. If so, come have a chat. We are happy to discuss how to get started. Oh, and if you look too keen, you may end up assisting with a few daily chores!
